The Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) has urged the federal government to withstand pressures from abroad on legalising same sex marriage.
National coordinator of the council Professor Ishaq Oloyede stated this in a communique at the end of its second quarter meeting held in Ilorin, Kwara state.
The statement commended the Senate for passing a bill against same sex marriage and urged the House of Representatives to follow suit, saying the practice offends the sensibility of Nigerians.
Co-chairmen of the Council, Sultan of Sokoto Alhaji Saad Abubakar and President Christian Association of Nigeria Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor attended the meeting.
